George MACHELL was possibly John MACHELL's father although this is at the moment an educated guess.
John MACHELL's death certificate indicates a date of birth of 1810/11. Based on this, the most compelling birth/christening record found is John MACHELL b. 22 Jan 1809, c. 8 Feb 1809 in Kendal by George and Margaret MACHELL. George and Margaret's other children were Edward (1806 Kendal), Wm (1811 Kendal), Henry (1814 Selside), George (1817 Staveley), Agnes (1820 Orton).
In 1829 a Geo MACHELL was a farmer at Patton Fold, Whitwell near Selside.
The farm "Patton Fold" has not been pinpointed. It may be Patton Hall, however it was almost certainly near to Mozergh House. Mozergh House, 'a pleasantly situated mansion' 4 1/4 miles NE of Kendal, was owned about that time by James MACHELL who was the Mayor of Kendal 1840-1,1847-8, and an alderman. He may also have been the James MACHELL who owned a transport business that shipped by canal and waggon to eg Liverpool. The canal opened in 1819.
It's possible that George and John were brothers and children of Edward and Ann Machell (George c.18/8/1776 and John c.16/11/1766).
There was a joiners business called Levens & Machell at Rose & Crown Yard, Kendal in 1829. John Scott may have had a connection with this business given that he was a furniture dealer by 1851 in Liverpool and his son was a cabinet maker. Perhaps he was apprenticed to Levens & Machell??
