Rupert Greville VANNER, who was known as Greville within the family was born in Bromsgrove at the beginning of the 20th century.
Greville was a Master mariner. He was killed during the Battle of the Atlantic in 1940 while Captain of the British steamship Bradfyne. SS Bradfyne was some 170 miles off the north Irish coast on November 22nd, 1940, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine U-100. She was on route from Montreal for Sydney and Belfast carrying 7,900 tons of grain. Capt. Vanner and 38 men were killed. The SS BRADFYNE was not in an official convoy at the time, but in total U-100 sank 7 ships that day.
U-100 itself was sunk on 17 Mar 1941 after being rammed and depth charged by HMS Vanoc and HMS Walker, with the loss of 38 men.
Captain VANNER was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star and the War Medal.
He and his crew are memorialised at the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
