Stephen appears in the 1861 census as a plasterer and slater in Northrowram, born in Holdsworth, Ovenden living with wife Sarah DENTON and children William, Stephen and Wharton.

Earlier in 1851 he is with Sarah, his three step-children and his eldest son John, aged 10 and in 1841 he is an innkeeper at Lee Bridge, with wife Sarah and his 10 month old son John, step-children Ellen and John RUSHWORTH and their grandfather George RUSHWORTH, 70.
