In 1939 Vera was attending, and presumably boarded at, the Royal Cross Primary School at Brockholes Row, Preston. It was and still is Lancashire’s only school for deaf children. It was founded in 1894 by Miss Mary Cross of Myerscough as the Cross Deaf and Dumb School, with the Royal title conferred by Queen Victoria in 1897.
