John Bailey GARNER was a Captain in the Royal Leicestershire Regiment during the First World War. He won the Military Cross twice.
The citation for the first MC was:
"T.Lt (A./Capt.) John Bailey Garner M.C., Leic. R.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of two companies ordered forward to reinforce the right of the brigade line. He led them without a check through the barrage, and took over the required portion of the line. On another occasion, when the company was again a little scattered by barrage, he collected them again, and although touch had been lost he brought them on intact to the front line."
The citation for his Bar to the MC was:
"T.Lt (A./Capt.) John Bailey Garner M.C., Leic. R.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty . When his company was almost surrounded this officer maintained his position and held up the advancing enemy, thus enabling companies on the flank to withdraw to a new line in accordance with orders. He handled his company in a very skillful manner, and his coolness and fine leadership greatly inspired his men. (M.C. gazetted 17th December, 1917)"
