Thomas was the second son of Christopher TILL and Sarah HACKET.
There are baptismal records for a Thomas, labourer, and Martha TILL in Edingale (1.2 miles from Harlaston): Thomas in May 1814, John in Dec 1815, Thomas again in Dec 1820, Christopher in Nov 1821 and Jane in 1824. This last record states that the family's abode is "Edengale belonging to Elford".
In addition to these children, a Sarah TILL, servant, with father Thomas TILL, labourer, was married in Tamworth in 1842 to John COULTON. One of the witnesses was Christopher TILL, who may have been Sarah's grandfather, her uncle or younger brother. In 1861 they were living in Swadlincote. Sarah was 47 and gave her place of birth as Edingale, Derbyshire. Historically Edingale was in Derbyshire, confirming that Sarah was a daughter of Thomas and Martha born 1812. No baptism for a Sarah TILL of that age can be found in Edingale or elsewhere, but Edingale records begin on 1 Jan 1813, so perhaps she was slightly older and her baptism record has been lost.
This lack of records may also hide the existance of an earlier christening of a Mary TILL by Thomas and Martha.
No obvious marriage has been found for a Thomas TILL and a Martha, however there is a possible marriage license/bond dated 23 May 1812 for a Thomas TAYLOR, aged 21 and upwards, of Harlaston to marry a Martha BROWN of Lullington, Derbyshire, aged 21 and upwards. Lullington is equidistant from Edingale and Coton in the Elms (i.e. Martha TILL's place of birth). Aside from the name TAYLOR these records fit nicely. Strangely, Thomas's brother Christopher's surname was given as TAYLOR for the christening of his first child (but not for his earlier marriage or later children's christenings.)
Thomas, 55-59, was living with his son John, 25-29, and a 5 year old Thomas in Elford in 1841.
Thomas and Martha were living in Elford in 1851. Thomas was 64 and an agricultural labourer and Martha was 68 from Coton, Derbyshire (and either blind or deaf and dumb). Their 29 year old son Christopher TILL was also a labourer living with his wife Mary Ann aged 36 from Tamworth.
By 1861, this Thomas TILL, aged 72, was a widower and was living alone in Elford. He was still there in 1871, aged 85, described as "Formerly Ag Lab" born in Elford. His death was registered in Q1 1873, aged 86. His burial in Elford on 7 Jan 1873 confirms his age as 86.
