Narrative and Notes

Henry is most likely the son of William and Betty FORREST of Mellor, christened 5 May 1765. His first two children were called William and Betty, he was from Mellor and he would have been about 25 years old when married.

Henry married Anne COUNSELL in 1790. We know from Anne's father's will that she had died with three surviving children by 1797, however four chistenings have been found:

- Betty 1791

- William 1792

- Ann 1793

- Ellen 1795

No burials in the period 1791-1797 can be found to identify which child did not survive until 1797. Also no burial for their mother Anne can be found.

Henry's second wife was Ann BARNES married on 13 Dec 1801 - this was probably his first wife's cousin Ann BARNES who would be 21 years old. A couple called Henry and Ann (or Nanny/Nancy) FORREST of Mellor baptized ten children in Blackburn over the next 15 years:

- Ellen 13 Apr 1803

- Henry 18 Apr 1804

- Jinny 17 Apr 1805

- Moulding 16 Jul 1806

- George 10 Feb 1808

- Henry 2 Aug 1809

- James born ~1810, baptized 3 Sep 1820?

- Moulding 20 Feb 1811

- Thomas 4 Nov 1812

- Richard 12 Aug 1814

- Betty 20 Mar 1816

This family is living in Mellor Brow in 1841 (Ann "Nany" is a widow with Henry, James and Moulding) which pretty much confirms that all these children are from the same family. NB None of the above children are called William or Ann, but Ellen and Betty are used. To make this fit, we might suppose that one of Betty or Ellen died prior to 1797, presumably Ellen as she was the first baptized in Henry's second family, with Betty dying later (perhaps 1812-1816 when she would be 21-25 and possibly married). No such burial records have been found, but one for Moulding (1811) has been which is inconsistent. Henry (1804) is found in later censuses living in Mellor Brow with his brothers James and Moulden, a nephew called SHARPLES and widowed housekeepers called Ellen COUNSELL and Alice BARNES, so the familial links are strong, even if these are servants.

In Henry's will written on 1 Oct 1823 and passed probate on 1 Jun 1824 under the name of Henry FORREST (the elder), yeoman of Mellor, Henry makes provision for his wife Nanny, and makes his sons William and Henry his executors. Unfortunately he does not name any other children or grandchildren, but does make provisions dependent on his young child attaining the age of twenty one, which almost all of his children with Ann BARNES would have been in 1823.
