James was a stonemason. He emigrated to South Africa on the Scotia and arrived on 11 March 1848. He was married twice.
His eldest son was a Thomas and the 2nd eldest daughter was Martha as per his parents.
There's evidence of his building in the Western Cape still today - an old building that was refurbished had a piece of the wall let exposed so that his craftsmanship can be seen. One of the family lines have his original tools of trade with his initials on. There's a tongue-in-cheek story of how he got to South Africa - one version is that when working on a project in the UK he got into an altercation with someone and dropped his hammer off the scaffolding hitting the man on the head - and it was thought better to have him relocate.
