Narrative and Notes

Edna May had a very lonely childhood and teenage years. The only work her parents could get in the 1920's was in the local cinema. Her Father was the projectionist and her Mother worked in the box office; and as they worked late, she was left alone at home in the evenings.

She would have loved to have been a nurse, but as she left school at 12, she had no education; and because of her up-bringing, she did not have the confidence to strive for her ambition. As a result she was forced to go into the Lancashire Cotton Industry as a weaver, spending day after day tending the looms in a factory. She hated every minute of the work, but the depression rescued her from the cotton mills, and she later found work in the laundry of a local hospital.

Edna married when she was 22, and she and Jack lived in Blackburn all their lives, first at 11 Mona Road and then at 58 Rockcliffe Street.

In 1939 Edna May was back working in the cotton mills. Her daughter, Marjorie, was born in October 1939.

Jack died in 1972, aged 64, and left Edna a widow for 22 years, until she died in 1994, just before the birth of her first great grandchild.

Until the death of Edna May in 1994, the family had been living within 500yds of the junction of Crossfield St and Grimshaw Park road for more than 120 years.
