We know that Mary was Mary THOMPSON from the christening record of her son William.
Thomas WATSON of North Ferriby and Elizabeth THOMPSON of Kirk-burn had banns of marriage read in North Ferriby (on the north bank of the Humber, 50 miles east) in May/June 1789, but the record of the actual marriage was left blank. Did the marriage not happen but they moved away and maintained a pretence in Barmby? Or did the marriage happen elsewhere with the record lost?
Kirkburn is 18 miles north of North Ferriby. There is no record of a Mary THOMPSON of Kirkburn, but a Mary THOMPSON was baptized by Hester THOMPSON, single woman, in Skerne on 17 Apr 1764. Skerne is 4 miles east of Kirkburn which is the nearest major town.
It is thought that they had five children in Barmby on the Marsh, four of which has surviving baptism records and Elizabeth whose baptism would have been in 1791/2, a period for which many of the parish records have been lost.
No burial or death record has been identified.
