Harriet ARCHIBALD was born in about 1831 in Askrigg, Yorkshire. In the 1840's her family moved to Blackburn, where in 1851 she is recorded as working as a cotton rover.

Harriet married twice, first to Joseph WHALLEY in 1852, and later to James ELSWORTH in 1871. James and Harriet only had one son.
