Narrative and Notes

Aged about 7 he was apprenticed by the Bromsgrove Overseers of the Poor to a William SMITH of Bournheath (2.5 miles N of Bromsgrove). He was most likely to work on a farm there being no industry in the village.

There are no compelling later records relating to William in or around Bromsgrove.

One compelling theory is that William emigrated to Pennsylvania to join his elder sisters. A marriage of a William NOOKS to a Hannah ERICKS'[ON?], dated 6 Aug 1750, appears in the registers of the Old Swedes Church (later Holy Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church), Wilmington, Delaware, Pennsylvania1. The fact that by this time William's sister Susannah RUMFORD had settled in Wilmington with her husband Jonathan makes this a reasonably likely narrative.
