Alice PARKES was born in Tamworth, Staffordshire, but her birth was registered in Ashton-under-Lyne, where her father was working.

In 1891, Alice PARKES was working as a resident domestic servant for Whittle Kay, a potato merchant at 98 Park Road, Blackburn.

She married a soldier in the Royal Scots Guards, Richard RILEY, in Q2 1897, possibly in response to her being pregnant with her daughter Lily, who was born in August 1897.

The couple had another daughter, Mary Alice, in 1899, before Richard was sent to South Africa to fight in the South African War (as known as the Second Boer War). He didn't return until 1902.

In 1901 she was living at 6 Maudsley Street with her father who was suffering from spastic paraplegia.

After Richard's return, in 1902, they had a further five children.

In 1939 she is living with her husband and their son John. Her birth date was given as 14 Oct 1875, however her birth registration confirms that it was Q4 1876.

If this age inaccuracy was honestly believed then there are two death registrations that would fit with this 1875 birth year:

- Alice RILEY died Q2 1943, aged 67, in Darwen

- Alice RILEY died Q4 1955, aged 80, in Blackburn

Other death registrations exist but without any age information.
