Narrative and Notes

Emelia (or Emily) ARCHIBALD was born in Askrigg in 1835.

Her family moved to Blackburn in the 1840s to live with her uncle Henry ARCHIBALD. In 1851 she was working as a cotton power loom weaver, aged 14, and in 1861 she is a Cotton Weaver living with her father Robert and brothers Robert and John who were all plasterers.

An Emily ARCHIBALD was married in Q3 1861 to Jonathan HILTON, a cotton overlooker. By 1871 this couple had 5 surviving children: Alice, Robert, John, James and Firth. They're living with Jonathan's mother Alice at 13 Lord Derby Street. A further son Samuel was born in 1885/6. The only problem is that this Emily gave her place of birth as Scotland in these and later censuses. But on balance, the use of the name Firth does point to this being the right Emily.
