Joseph TURNER married Sarah HOLYDAY/HALLIDAY on 11 Mar 1793 in St Peter's, the Leeds parish church. Sarah was originally from Oulton (just east of Rothwell where she was baptized). Their first son, Isaac was baptized 9 months 2 weeks later.
If would appear that the family started their married life in Bramley to the westr of Leeds, before later moving to the Rothwell area of Sarah's upbringing.
Joseph and Sarah baptized Isaac TURNER in January 1794 in Bramley Chapel, near Leeds.
In 1841 Joseph, 73 years old and a clothier, was living with the ROPER family on White Hall Road, Rothwell. The head of the household was John ROPER, 44, and his wife was Sarah, 35[-39]1. Sarah TURNER married John RAPER, a clothier from Armley, on 8 Nov 1829 in Leeds. The 1851 census clarifies that she was Sarah, born in Bramley, aged 41, so born in 1809/10. This is thought to be Joseph's daughter Sarah baptized in December 1809 in Bramley Chapel. This links Joseph TURNER of Bramley with Rothwell. Furthermore Joseph being 73 in 1841 suggests a birth year of 1767-1768. A Joseph TURNER, born 20 Jan 1767 was baptized by Abraham TURNER junior in St Peter, Bramley on 31 May 1767.
Given that there are 15 years between Isaac and Sarah's baptisms, it is a fair guess that Joseph married shortly before Isaac was born. His estimated birth year 1768 suggests that he might have married after 1789. So perhaps between 1789 and 1793. This fits perfectly with the marriage with Sarah HALLYDAY which also explains why the family lived in both Bramley and Rothwell despite them being of opposite sides of Leeds.
Joseph and Sarah will likely have had other children between Isaac in 1794 and Sarah in 1809, but there appear to have been multiple Joseph TURNERs who baptized/buried children in Bramley Chapel, making identification very difficult. For example John and Joseph TURNER are baptized on different days in July 1797 and Sarah and William both baptized in December 1809. It's not clear which of the following are siblings of Isaac and Sarah, but perhaps like Isaac and Sarah they can also be found in Rothwell later in life.
- 26 Jan 1794 - Isaac - Bramley Chapel
- 19 Jul 1795 - John - Bramley Chapel - Buried 30 Sep 1795
- 03 Apr 1796 - Hannah - Bramley Chapel - Probably married William LAMBERT, shoe maker in Nov 1815. William and Hannah LAMBERT are living in Bramley in 1841, both aged 45, but she is widowed in 1851 living on Pepper Lane in Bramley, with 4 children.
- 02 Jul 1797 - John - Bramley Chapel - Buried 24 Mar 1798
- 23 Jul 1797 - Joseph - Bramley Chapel - Buried 22 Sep 1797
- 26 May 1799 - Sarah - Bramley Chapel
- 28 Jul 1799 - Joseph - Bramley Chapel
- 02 Oct 1803 - Tabitha - Bramley Chapel - Perhaps married John PULLAN 1823 then Thomas HOLLINGS 1836 in Calverley. Or Tabitha Turner married one of these people: Joseph Wood, Charles Knapton, Uriah Walls, Benjamin Whittam in Leeds registration district in 1843. The only death found for these names was Tabitha WOOD of Hunslet in 1854 (3 miles from Rothwell on the road to Leeds) however this Tabitha appeared in 1841 and 1851 in Templar Street as an unmarried shopkeeper. Another Tabitha WOOD was 45-49 in 1841 married to a John WOOD, so also not a good fit. There is a T.W. married housewife, born c1803, an inmate of the Pauper Lunatic Asylum for the West Riding of the County of York in 1861 in Stanley cum Wrenthorpe.
- 22 Apr 1804 - Robert - Bramley Chapel
- 03 Dec 1809 (born 7 Aug 1809) - Sarah - Bramley Chapel
