Solomon SIMPSON was from Pateley Bridge in Yorkshire. He was probably a lead miner.
Based on his nine children's baptismal records he was living at High-hardcastle near Pateley Bridge between 1758 and 1762, at Greenhow Hill in 1764 and then Coldstonefold between 1768 and 1773.
The village of Greenhow is the highest village in England at 1300ft above sea level and was built for the lead mining community. Lead from the workings in Greenhow, Coldstones and Hardcastle was used locally but also sent to Windsor and abbeys in Northern France. Local stone was also valuable.
