Narrative and Notes

John NEWBOULD was a coal miner, who was born and lived in and around Rothwell, Yorkshire for his whole life.

He married Hannah JOY in April 1820 and they had 10 children between 1820 and 1847. Hannah was John's (half) 1st cousin; Sarah JOW was grandmother to both of them.

John died on 10 Sep 1866 in a coal mining accident when the roof fell in on him. The place of death is given as "Rhodes Green", which was likely the phonetic spelling of "Royd's Green". It suggests that John survived long enough to be carried home before succumbing to his injuries.

John's widow Hannah JOY died on 6 May 1876 at Lee Moor, Stanley.
