Elizabeth SIMPSON was born in Coldstoneford and was baptized by Solomon SIMPSON on 3 Oct 1773 in Pateley Bridge. Coldstonefold had been a monastic farm since 16th century.
She married James JOY, a lead miner, on 5 Feb 1794 in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, an event which was witnessed by a Solomon SIMPSON who may have been her father or her older brother Solomon, who was baptized by Solomon senior on 26 Feb 1771.
They baptized one child, Patty on 23 Dec 1795, which is consistent with the family moving the 30 miles south to Lofthouse in about 1796.
James and Elizabeth JOY baptized at least seven children in Rothwell between 1797 and 1817. There may have been other children as there are some gaps, but they may not have survived.
In 1841 census Elizabeth JOY, aged 60-64, of independent means, is living in the hamlet of Stanley Lane Ends with Martha JOY, aged 45-49. Her daughter Hannah NEWBOULD is also living in Stanley Lane Ends.
The identity of Martha is a mystery. No christening record for a Martha JOY of this age has been found locally, and the only marriage of a JOY with a Martha was in Snaith (22 miles away). One possibility is that Martha JOY was "Patty" baptized in 1795 and who would have been 45 in June 1841?
