Margaret SPENCE baptized her daughter Dinah in 1739. The child was illegitimate and the father was not recorded.
It is thought that her father was John SPENCE of Fewston who baptized 11 children between 1703 and 1728. Margaret was the third child. Only one Margaret SPENCE baptized in Fewston, in 1710, but there is also a burial, in 1734. The baptism of Dinah in 1739 proves that there was another Margaret SPENCE was in Fewston, but whether that was the Margaret born in 1710 or another is unclear. There was a Margaret SPENCE baptized in 1725 in Otley (7 miles from Fewston, but Fewston's nearest town), who could have been a 14 year old single mother, or she might have died aged 9.
An alternative explanation is the Margaret SPENCE who died in 1734 was the wife of another SPENCE. A Margaret BORMER married William SPENCE in 1669 in Fewston, but if she married aged 21 then by 1734 she would have been 86. This elderly lady could have been Margaret's grandmother.
No clear marriage or burial for Margaret has been found.
