John GARNER married Frances WOODWARD in 1715. Together they had a single son, Francis baptized in Hinckley.
A John GARNER also baptized Thomas in Aug 1723 and John in 1725, both in Burbage. Also active in Burbage were Nicholas GARNER (6 baptisms between 1698 and 1710) and Richard (Richard 1727, Mary 1731). Then a John and Mary GARNER baptized Mary 1731-1731 and Mary 1732.
John may also have married Frances TRUBY in 1705. If so then he was - at that time - from "Northtoft" in Northamptonshire (now Nortoft, 23 miles south of Hinckley). A John GARNER was baptized in Husbands Bosworth in 1673 by Henry and Ann, which is 8 miles north of Nortoft in the direction of Leicester, which would have made him 32 in 1705 and 42 in 1715. No burial of Frances GARNER nee TRUBY has been found though.
It is thought that Frances WOODWARD is the mother of Francis GARNER rather than Frances TRUBY primarily because of the timing of the birth shortly after the marriage of John GARNER and Frances WOODWARD. But is it possible that John and Frances TRUBY had only recently returned to Hinckley when Francis was baptized.
If John was not from Nortoft, then a likely baptism in Hinckley was in October 1681 by William GARNER. This John would have been 33 years old in January 1715 (and 23 in 1705, assuming he had relocated to Nortoft). William also baptized a William (1675) and Francis (1677). Did John name his son after his older brother?
John may have been buried on:
- 16 Aug 1730 in Hinckley
- 19 Jun 1751 in Hinckley, a pauper. If born in 1681 then he would have been 70 and reliant on the help of others. As his grandson, named John, was baptized in 1753 in Hinckley, this burial seems unlikely unless the whole family were destitute at that time. John's son Francis married Pudence BARNES 6 weeks after this burial.
