Richard, the son of Nicholas GARNER, was baptized on 14 Mar 1704 in Burbage.
Richard lived into his 80s. His last will and testament made the following provisions:
- All his copyhold buildings in Burbage in his own occupation, and his land in the open and common fields of Burbage and in the enclosure of Burbage in the occupation of Richard WARNER, Thomas NEAL, Abraham HARRIS and himself, and all his estate and effects whatsoever were given to his friend Samuel QUENIBOROUGH on trust that he would dispose of the assets as follows
- £30 apiece to sons Robert and John GARNER
- £30 apiece to daughters Elizabeth DAWSON and Sarah BUSWEL
- the remainder to go to son Richard GARNER.
Richard Garner senior died on 9 May 1792 and was buried in Burbage.
The following is the latest and best theory for his family:
This Richard GARNER
- Richard GARNER, yeoman of Burbage, married Hannah LOW of nearby Aston Flamville in 1725. They baptized two children, Richard and Mary, in Burbage, before Hannah died in April 1729.
- Then Richard married Martha PRAT, also in Aston Flamville in 1734. They baptized a daughter, Elizabeth in 1737 and Sarah 1746 at the Great Meeting Presbyterian Chapel in Hinckley.
- There are two other children baptized by Richard and Mary GARNER in the Great Meeting: Robert in Jan 1740/41 and John in Dec 1741. It is thought that "Mary" was actually "Martha". The dates fit and the full set of five surviving children are accounted for.
Unresolved points:
- There is no burial record for Richard's daughter Mary, or she survived but was excluded from Richard's will. A Mary GARNER, daughter of John GARNER of Burbage, was buried in October 1731. Perhaps, after the death of Richard's wife Hannah, Mary had been adopted by his older brother John and his wife Mary TIBBALD. They were experienced parents having had three boys, in 1723, 1726 and 1727, but no girl.
- There is also no burial for Martha.
The second Richard GARNER
Richard GARNER married Mary BAKER in Hinckley in 1732. They had three children baptized at the Great Meeting Presbyterian Chapel: Mary 1733/34, Elizabeth 1735 and John in 1738. John died after 5 weeks and Mary was buried on 10Aug 1738.
In September 1740 Richard married an Elizabeth SNOW in Aston Flamville.
A second Mary GARNER, wife of Richard GARNER, was buried on 8 Mar 1741/42 in Leicester.
