Thomas' parents
It's not known who Thomas' parents were.
It's not known whether Thomas was Thomas Stanton BAILEY or Thomas STANTON BAILEY or Thomas STANTON alias BAILEY. He being identified as a labourer, when younger, a farmer when his children where marrying and a grazier in later years, suggests that he was tied to the land, specifically near Hinckley and Barwell. His wife, Alice GREWCOCK, was born in Barwell, so it is entirely possible that he was not born locally and gained his land via marriage and/or his own industry. He could theoretically have been born anywhere, however his marriage by banns suggests that he was aged 21 and above and was born in a Leicestershire parish.
Thomas Stanton BAILEY's reported age at his death on 1 Nov 1839 was 56 suggesting a birth date between Nov 1782 to Oct 1783. A William Stanton BAILEY, who died in 1850 aged 70 in Wolverhampton, might have been a elder brother.
Possible local baptismal records include:
- Thomas STANTON - 24 May 1778, Norton by Twycross by Thomas and Ann STANTON (15 miles away).
- Thomas BAILEY 1780, Long Whatton, Leics by Joshua and Ann BAILEY
- Thomas BAILEY 26 Feb 1780, Desford by Thomas and Ann
- Thomas BAILEY Jun 1782, Ashby de la Zounch by James BAILEY4
- Thomas Bailey 19 Jun 1783, Foleshill,Warwickshire by John and Mary BAILEY. Foleshill is 11 miles from Hinckley. Also Dorothy 1780, Samuel 1782, and Lucy 1787. The John and Mary BAILEY baptizing children in Nueaton were a separate family based on overlapping dates.
Thomas BAILEY 4 Jul 1784 at Swepstone cum Snarestone by William and Alice BAILEY. They also baptized: Elizabeth 1777, Alice 1779, Phyllis 1781, Thomas 7 Jul 1783 (buried 2 Nov 1783), Thomas 4 Jul 1784 and Samuel 1786. This Thomas BAILEY, 31 of Clock Mill was buried in Swepstone in 1816 and left his estate to cousins and his sister Phyllis.Thomas BAILEY - 1 Apr 1784, Sharnford by Willam and Anne (but an unmarried Thomas BAILEY, born 1784 is living in Sharnford in 1841/51/61. This Thomas was mentioned in his grazier grandfather Christopher BAILEY's will of 1790, noting that Thomas' father William BAILEY had died.)- Thomas BAILEY - 5 Nov 1788, Hinckley by Thomas and Elizabeth nee NEWHAM. Unless the baptism was delayed (which is unlikely as they also baptized Elizabeth in 1786) then this Thomas would have been too young to marry under banns in Nov 1808. Theoretically, had he been born prior to Nov 1787 but not baptized until Nov 1788, then could have married as he turned 21 in 1808.
There are a couple marriages of a BAILEY and a STANTON (or similar):
- Priscilla BAILEY married Joseph STANTON on 29 Oct 1776 in Paulerspury, Northamptonshire by license.1 Paulerspury is 40 miles south of Hinckley. Thomas STANTON BAILEY's granddaughter was also named Priscilla, and was a witness to the marriage of her cousin Esther BAILEY in 1862. They baptized John STANTON in 1778 in Paulerspury.
- William BAILEY married a Mary STANTON on 16 Feb 1784 in Donington in Holland, Lincolnshire, which is 63 miles east of Hinckley and is two years too late for the estimated date of birth of Thomas, but fits nicely with the names. They baptized William (1786), Richard (1786, died 1787), Stephen (1787), Ann (1788), William (1789) and Ann (1791), but no Thomas. Not thought to be relevant.

Other information
The Thomas STANTON who married Sarah SHIPMAN in Hinckley in November 1798 was not Thomas Stanton BAILEY. Although a Sarah STANTON died in 1807 in Warwick, which fits with Thomas' November marriage to Elizabeth GREWCOCK a year later, Thomas and Sarah STANTON had four children including a Sarah 1801 and Thomas 1803, which conflicts with Thomas and Elizabeth BAILEY having Sarah 1815 and Thomas 1820. There were no burials of a Sarah STANTON, but a Sarah STANTON married John PRICE in Earl Shilton (4 miles from Hinckley) in 1829 implying that she was alive when Sarah 1815 was baptized. The key evidence though is that Thomas STANTON could sign his name on his wedding record and "Thomas Bailey Stanton" (the name Thomas used when he married in 1808) could not.
Samuel STANTON, self-styled 'Instructor of youth', 38 and wife Maria I from Guernsey, living in Oldbury in 1851 with children Emma B STANTON (born in Honduras), Frederick B STANTON (born in Belize) and others.
