Rachael and her husband Thomas HILL, a fellmonger, baptized their first child, Ann, in Grimston, Leicestershire in March 1711 (or 1712 under the Gregorian calendar). It was the common custom to birth and baptize the first child close to the mother's family, so it is likely that Rachael was from Grimston. Grimston is 2.5 miles north of Asfordby.
A fellmonger is a dealer of skins and hides, most likely sheepskin, but Thomas may also have prepared the hides ready for tanning.
No marriage can be found for a Thomas HILL marrying a Rachael. Grimston records for this period do exist so it must have happened elsewhere and the records lost or mistranscribed.
Her husband, Thomas, died in 1724.
The widowed Rachael remarried, in May 1726, to Francis WALKER of Asfordby. Francis, a farmer, who was 29 years old. They baptized a son, William, in March 1726 (ie 1727 in the Gregorian calendar). This marriage did not last as she died in January 1730 (or 1731 using the Gregorian calendar).
Based on the likely date of 1710 for her first marriage, Rachael was probably born 1680-90. There are no baptisms of a Rachel in those years in Grimston. There is a Rachel REATAM buried in Grimston who might be a mother, but no other REATAM or similar records can be found.
