Narrative and Notes

Robert JOYCE married Sarah SOARES in Woodhouse in May 1728.

Together they baptized four children in Woodhouse, although their daughter Ann died in April 1743. Robert died a month later in May 1743.

Their fifth child, a son named Robert, was baptized the following January.

Robert JOYCE is a rare name in this area and no baptismal record for a Robert JOYCE has been identified within 10 miles of Woodhouse between 1680-1710.

There is a birth record of an unnamed son of a Robert JOYCE on 9 Nov 1696 in Castle Donnington who might have been named Robert. Robert JOYCE senior, an ironmonger, baptized Sarah (Dec 1686), William (Dec 1691), Nicholas (Feb 1693), a son (born Nov 1696) and Mary (Jul 1702). He died a pauper is Castle Donnington in 1723. None of his children were buried as infants so we can assume that the unnamed son survived.

The only marriage for a Robert JOYCE of this earlier period in the wider area was between Robert JOYCE (born in Claverdon, Warwickshire) and Mary BIDLE in Warwick in April 1686. This couple baptized a girl in Claverdon in 1686 so can be ruled out as being the Castle Donnington family.
