Narrative and Notes

William WELDON was a tailor like his father John. He also kept a small-holding and lent money to supplement his income.

He married Elizabeth BEELY/BEEBY in Hungerton (6 miles south of Syston) in February 1674. They had three sons: Robert 1675, William and John 1679. No baptismal record for their son William has been found, but he was mentioned in at least two wills.

William WELDON wrote his will on 28 May 1708 and was buried in Syston three days later.

In his will he left £10 to his son John. His son William received the "frame or stockinge loume" that William used and £40. All the household items went to his "now wife" Elizabeth, but to be divided equally between his sons Robert, William and John after her death. His son Robert was to provide for his mother, but received his father's dwellinghouse outhouses, gardens, orchards and backsides, and all arable land, meadow ground, pastures, sheep, domons and premises with their appurtenances situate in Syston, along with anything else, and was made executor.

William's estate inventory (below) reveals that aside from being a tailor William kept 3 hives of bees, a pig and 3 cows and made cheese from the milk. His biggest assets were money he had lent out and his crops in the field (probably wheat and barley as his had stocks in his barn of "corne and mault").

"Tailors" in rural communities in the 17th century were often not primarily involved in the making of new clothes. Not being members of a city guild, and not paying any dues, the rural tailors were despised by the city guildmakers. They might occasionally make clothes from supplied cloth and repair old clothes, but they would also supplement their wages with agricultural activity and money lending as appears to be the case with William.
