1Henry was born in February 1889.
He attested into the Royal Horse & Royal Field Artillery on 31 July 1906. He may have inflated his age a bit as his attestation papers suggest that his birth date was exactly one year older than was actually true. In November 1906 he was posted to 104 Battery as a Gunner. In July 1909 he extended his service to 6 years, and on completion of this, on 31 Jul 1912, he was moved to the Reserve.
During this pause he married Elizabeth WRAGG in Sheffield and they had a son Kenneth on 25 May 1914 in Sheffield. It was probably at this point that his next of kin was changed from sisters Maggie, Alicia Ann and Elizabeth of the Parish of Blackburn to his wife at 36 Netherthorpe Street, Sheffield.
On 6 Aug 1914 he was posted to 34 Brigade, 70th Battery, part of the British Expeditionary Force to France.
On 11 Jan 1916 he was awarded the Distinghuished Conduct Medal (London Gazette 14 Jan 1916, No. 29438). "For conspicuous gallantry: he was continuously repairing and laying wires by day and night under very heavy shell fire. On one day the wire was cut six times."
On 7 Feb 1916 he was promoted to Bombadier and to Corporal on 6 Aug 1916.
On 25 Aug 1917, Henry left France having been transferred to civilian work at a munitions factory in Sheffield. There appears to have been some confusion regarding the posting and much paperwork was generated.
His service was reckoned up to 12 Dec 1918, with 12 years and 187 days service.
Henry died in 1920 in Wortley, Yorkshire. It's not clear whether he died of wounds sustained during his service.
