James married Mary A PARK in Q1 1924. Mary Ann was 18 years older and had previously married Thomas TALBOT in 1901. This is confirmed by the 1939 Register in which James is living with Mary and which confirms James' birth date.
An 18 year old Irene and 5 year old Lilian(?) are living with them. Irene would have been born prior to James' marriage to Mary, but her registered birth in Oldham gives her name as Irene HIGGINSON with mother PARK.
The 5 year old is doubly mysterious. Her forename name is illegible, but has been transcribed as Lilian. Her surname was initial written as HIGGINSON then crossed out and - in the same pen and hand - replaced with WHITEHEAD. Normally this would imply a later marriage, but it looks contemporaneous to the original return, and there are no later marriage between HIGGINSON and WHITEHEAD. Mary would have been 56 when "Lilian" was born, so if a child of James and Mary then she was a late one. My suspicion is that this 5 year old girl was a visitor.
A James HIGGINSON of the correct age died in 1969 in Preston where his family were based for the next three generations.
Other information:
A James HIGGINSON married Ellen FENTON in 1919, but this James lived with Ellen in School Street between 1921 and 1930 so could not have married Mary in 1924.
A James HIGGINSON married Anne INGHAM in 1914.
