Narrative and Notes

Samuel SCOTT was born in Kendal and was the ninth child of Thomas and Hannah SCOTT.

In 1851 he was living with his parents at 48 Highgate, Kendal and was a currier's apprentice. Currying was the name given to the process of stretching and finishing tanned leather, thus, rendering it supple and strong for the use of a saddler or cobbler.

He was present at the death of his father Thomas SCOTT at Highgate, Kendal on 6 Sep 1859, and witnessed the marriage of his sister Hannah to William Tate in 1864.

Hi Paul,

Here is the family tree as far as I have got upto now. I only got into

family history at the end of November last year so after 2 1/2 months there

are still a few holes in the information. Like full dates!

Samuel and Nancy Scott (nee Anderson) had several children as you know

including my ancestor Thomas brother of your John.

Thomas born 7/5/1860 married Alice Tanner on 26/3/1880 when the Scott family

were living at 30 Captain French Lane and the Tanners were at 10, Far Cross

Bank Kendal. Alice was born 1857 and died 28/5/1930.Thomas died of Phihisis

( Tuberculosis) in the presence of his mother Nancy on 10/2/1883 at 30,

Captain French lane. I have the birth marriage and death certificates for

these events in Thomas' life.

They had two Children . Ada Scott was born in 1880 and in the 1881 Census

she is 8 months old.She married an Arthur Lowry in 1902 and died on

14/1/1930 and is buried with her mother in the churchyard of St. Oswald's in

Burneside near Kendal.

Their second child was my grandfather also Thomas Scott born 1883 and

married my grandmother Annie Ruttledge (born 3/8/1884) on 31/5/1910 at

Burneside.

Annie died in 1957. They had two children. the elder was my aunt Gladys

baptised 28/7/1912 and living atHollin Row, Burneside. She was a teacher,

unmarried, who lived in Tebay and she died c 1978 on holiday at Gatehouse of

Fleet in southern Scotland having just retired a couple of weeks earlier..

The second child was Elsie , my mother, who was born 10/9/1921 while they

were living at 14, Queen Katherine Street in Kendal. She married Gerard

Simms of 10, Lower Linenhall Street, Londonderry N.I. on 24/6/1944 having

met while both serving in the Royal Air Force. They lived at the time a 5,

Appleby Road, Kendal . This area was known in the past as Far Cross Bank

West (see above)but the name had been changed.

I was born 24/3/1945. I have two younger sisters Patricia Ann 30/9/1950 and

Clare Marie 20/8/1955. They , of course have children but that is current .

My grandfather, having been born an orphan was brought up by his mother at

the home of her sister Eleanor , born 1861, and her brother in law John

William Winder(born 1857) .

As you can see there are quite a few gaps to fill in next time I visit the

Cumbria Count Records Office at County Hall Kendal.

Hope it all adds to the sum of the knowledge.

Regards,

Philip Simms
