Narrative and Notes

Elizabeth MACHELL was born on 12 November 1839, and was christened at Natland, near Kendal, Westmorland on 15 December of that year, a few weeks before her father John died of a fever. Perhaps unsurprisingly Elizabeth's birth registration was overlooked.

The first year of her life was spent at Kendal Parks farm. In 1841 her mother married John THEXTON and they had two further children.

In 1851 Elizabeth was staying with her grandmother Nancy KENDAL in Marthwaite, Sedbergh. Also with them are her uncle William, cousin Robert and cousin Mary HEATON.

Elizabeth may have met her husband John SCOTT through her sister Nancy who, in 1851, was servant to a wood merchant & joiner in Kendal. One of the apprentices at that time was another John SCOTT who is believed to be a cousin of the John SCOTT she ended up marrying.

By 1861 she was in service to a tea dealer at 56 Kensington, West Derby. Her sister and aunt were in service on Edge Lane, another major thoroughfare which runs west into Liverpool and is parallel to Kensington.

Elizabeth married John SCOTT at St Mary, Edge Hill in Liverpool in 1864. Her sister Nancy was a witness. At the time she was living at Abercrombie Square, a very fine garden square surrounded by affluent terraces houses now in the heart of Liverpool University. Perhaps she was staying with friends of the MACHELLS, or perhaps more likely, like her sisters, she was in service. Her marriage certificate doesn't give her occupation.

John and Elizabeth SCOTT continued to live in Everton/Liverpool although they retained connections with Kendal. They had seven children between 1866 and 1885. They were John William, Thomas, Edith, Maud, Edward, Charles and Randolph.

Elizabeth died in January 1892 of influenza and bronchitis. She was 51 years old.

Subject: re thexton connection

Hi Barry, Gary Thexton sent me an email about your enquiry, i have left a note on thexton site but not sure if you have access? I am one of many, i guess- descendants of Edward and Jane Thexton (nee Machell although my records show it as Michael) my great granddfather Benjamin Wregg married their daughter Margaret 28th march 1872St Annes Church, Aigberth West Derby. My dad Benjamin Griffin Wregg is still alive aged 85 and lives near by on the Gold Coast near Brisbane Australia. His old scratched notes had mentioned that Jane was twice married and had asister Ann so it

is good to fill in the gap with your confirmation of this.Benjamin and margaret are listed by the way on 1881 census at Bentinck st Birkenhead where my G Grandfather had his workshop. I have Edward marrying Jane Machell dec 1/4

in GRO index vol 25 page 479 Edward died apparently in Kendall 26th feb 1849 aged 37. hope this helps .

It would be good to hear from you

regards
