Ann CORKER was baptised in Burnsall in August 1836 by her widowed mother Anne CORKER nee COUPER. Her father, Tobias CORKER, had died earlier that year.
Ann married William NEWBOULD in 1757. They lived in Greenhouse Hill and had nine children.
Who were Ann's parents?
There were two possible scenarios:
A. Ann was the mother of an illegitimate daughter. Father unknown.
- Robert CORKER of Cliffe (and Hannah GATILL m. 1742) baptized Anne (1746/7) in Pateley Bridge
- Richard KIRCKER of Grassing[ton] baptized Thomas KIRCKER in Linton in Craven (adjacent to Burnsall) in 1747.
In the years before Ann baptized her daughter in 1736, Robert CORKER and his family where the only namesakes in the area baptizing children. Robert was described as a sojourner when he married Sarah ALLANSON in Pateley Bridge on 18 Apr 1720, by "ye publication" of banns.1 They had several children in Pateley Bridge, but no Ann. When living in Felbeck or Felbeckhouses (3 miles east of Pateley Bridge) they baptized John CORKER on 3 Jan 1720/21, and having moved to Whitehouses, they baptized Thomas, 18 Nov 1722, Hannah, 18 Apr 1725 and Isabel on 9 Feb 1728/29.
If Ann has given birth in 1736, then she was almost certainly born before Robert and Sarah were married, so could have been from an earlier marriage, most likely Robert's. There are two other contemporaneous CORKERs in the area, who may also have been earlier children of Robert:
Ideally, Ann, Robert and Richard would have baptismal records confirming this, however the only approximate result is a Robert COCKER who baptized several children, including Ann in 1708 and Robert in 1716, in Leyland, Lancashire. This would make Ann 28 in 1736, and Robert 26 when he married. But there is no Richard and no COCKER deaths .
B. Ann was a recent widow, having married a CORKER.
A Tobias CORKER, of Pateley Bridge and Anne COUPER of the Parish of Burnsall were married on 8 Dec 1734 in Pateley Bridge.2 Tobias CORKER was buried on 3 Feb 1735/36 in Pateley Bridge.3 It is evident that Anne was pregnant with her daughter Ann at the time of Tobias' death. This record also explains the reason for Ann's baptism in Burnsall, it being her mother's home before marriage.
