Ann CORKER (or KOORKER) of Green Hill was the single mother of Ann CORKER who was baptized in 1736 in Burnsall.
She married James CHALLENGEHOUSE/CHALLINGHOUSE, who was either a 66 year old miner of Green Hill or a 29 year old yeoman from Fewston, in April 1745 in Burnsall. She was a spinster. There were no children baptised. That they stayed in Green Hill and had no children suggests that she married the older man.
There were no other CORKERs or variants near to Green Hill before Ann CORKER was baptized in 1736, so we can only speculate how Ann ended up in a mining town. Perhaps she was banished to avoid a scandal or she moved to the town for work. Or she might have been a member of the local CORK(E) or a CORKET(T) families, although no baptisms of an Ann can be found.
Possible baptisms further afield include:
- Hannah CARKAR in Kirkbymoorside, near York (42 miles east of Pateley Bridge) in 1699, but she would likely be too old.
