Narrative and Notes

Robert WELDON was baptized in 1713 by his parents Robert WELDON, a tailor, and Anne UGDEN in Syston, County of Leicester.

In 1719, when he was six years old his great uncle Robert WELDON, a tailor, bequeathed his dwellinghouse and homestead in Syston to his nephew Robert's second son Robert (provided he reached 21 years.) Why he left such property to a six year old is unclear, although his name may have been a factor and he may have been a favourite of the childless couple.

The will also contained a provision that his nephew Robert (i.e. this Robert's father) pay his brother William £5. There is no other record of Robert's father having a brother William, so this provision was probably intended for Robert's brother William born 1710.

His older brother William died the following year, so the bequest would likely never have been received.

There's no mention of Robert's profession, but his father and his generous great uncle were both tailors.

In 1740 Robert's father died leaving the bulk of his land to Robert. Taken with the land received from his great uncle Robert would have inherited most of the land held by this branch of the Weldon family.

In 1749 Robert married Jane ROYLE, the daughter of the Rector of Seagrave and Curate of Syston who had died shortly after Jane's birth. He would have been 36 when he married.

They had two children: Thomas 1750 and Robert 1753, before Jane died in 1754.

Robert died in Syston in 1761, leaving Thomas and Robert without parents. It is likely that the boys were apprenticed young with Thomas becoming a framework knitter and Robert becoming a baker's apprentice in Leicester.
