John BROOKE of Adwalton baptized five children in Birstall between 1609 and 1615. Like in later generations of the BROOKE family, John and his wife may have had triplets, with two surviving long enough to be baptized:
- Infant buried Nov 1615
- Thomas bap. Dec 1615
- Martha bap. Jan 1615/16
It does seem strange though that both surviving children weren't baptized at the same time, but perhaps their relative health on the day prevented the journey.
A licence of 1608 (undated) for the marriage of John BROOKE of Birstall and Grace COSIN of Bawtry (40 miles from Birstall) might be relevant however the licence index mentions John BROOKE of Birstall - rather than Adwalton or Drighlington - so more evidence is required to confirm. For now this is a tentative marriage based on name, place and date, however there were other John BROOKEs in the area at that time. No clear record of a burial of a Grace BROOKE in Birstall has been found.
A John BROOKE was baptized in Huddersfield in December 1583 by John BROOKE of D[e]ighton (on the road between Huddersfield and Birstall).
