Thomas NAYLOR baptized multiple children in Wakefield including Anne NAYLOR, in 1722/23, who it is thought to have married John PEARSON in 1739. Anne's baptism notes that Thomas was from Oulton, 6 miles north of Wakefield.
There were two other Thomas NAYLORs baptizing children near Wakefield during this period. A Thomas NAYLOR of Horse Race End, Heath, labourer, baptized Thomas 1718, William 1722 and Mary 1726 in Warmfield. A Thomas NAYLOR of Kirkgate baptized John 1725, Ann 1727 , Sarah 1728, and Thomas 1729. These children have not been ascribed to this Thomas NAYLOR, but they may yet prove to be related.
The possible marriages of Thomas NAYLORs appear to map to the above families:
- 1712 Thomas NAYLOR & Mary FLETCHER both of Warmfield i.e. Thomas of Horse Race End, Heath, Warmfield
- 1718 Thomas NAYLOR of Rothwell & Anne TOMLINSON of Warmfield i.e. Thomas of Oulton near Rothwell
- 1719 Thomas NAYLOR of Wakefield and Elizabeth WHITELEY of Halifax (licence) i.e. Thomas of Westgate, Wakefield
A Thomas NAYLOR, perukemaker and barber of Wakefield, took apprentices in 1730, 1736 and 1742. One was called William THORNTON.
There were six baptisms of Thomas NAYLORs locally:
- 1682 son of Robert in Rothwell
- 1686 son of Thomas in Wakefield - died 6 Sep 1691?
- 1686 son of William in Wakefield
- 1688/89 son of John of Woodhouse (south of Normanton) and Isabell in Normanton (close to Warmfield)
- 1690 son of William in Wakefield
- 1691 son of Thomas in Wakefield - died 6 Sep 1691?
- 1691 son of Joshua in Leeds
These suggest that Thomas was at least 27 when he married Anne TOMLINSON and potentially in his mid-30s. He may have been a widower, however the marriage was by banns so that is less likely.
If he was a widower then there should be an earlier marriage. There was only one local marriage 1698-1718: a marriage licence arranged in 1698 between a Thomas NAYLOR of Leeds and Martha NORFOLK of Wakefield, who later married in Sandal Magna south of Wakefield. Further afield, a Thomas NAYLOR 27, married Agnes REYNER 21 of Gomersall in Birstall in 1700. The only other candidate is the 1712 marriage above, however that is accounted for.
An Anne wife of Thomas NAYLOR was buried in Wakefield in 1729. Two weeks later Thomas NAYLOR of Woodside was also buried in Wakefield. Woodside might have been Woodside Farm 8 miles west of Wakefield on the Huddersfield Road.
