Narrative and Notes

Robert KENDAL in 1881 was a farmer of 118 acres living at Killington Hall, Killington. He also farmed the Oaks in Marthwaite.

Robert appears in the Westmorland Gazette numerous times during the 1850s in reports of the Sedbergh Agricultural Exhibition. In 1857 Robert won first prize for his shearling tup lamb (a one year old ram, not yet sheared), and first place for his gimmer lamb (a two year old ewe). He retained his crowns in 1858. In 1861 Robert won second place and 5 shillings in Class III Three Thorough-bred Sheep for his whiteface tup lamb, and second place (7s 6d) for "the best two-years old colt(or gelding) or filly, for saddle or harness, in the hands of the breeder". "At the conclusion of the business of the field the company repaired to the Bull and Dog Inn where a dinner both excellent and adundant (unusually so for the very low charge made for it)..."

In 1862, his focus had shifted to his cattle, when he won for the best bull calf (winning £1 10s) and the best yearling heifer (15s) in the hands of the owner, with second for best heifer calf (7s 6d).
