Jane KENDAL was the eldest daughter of Robert and Nancy KENDAL of Marthwaite near Sedbergh, Yorkshire.
She christened a child, Mary Ann KENDAL, in Killington, prior to marrying John MACHELL, with whom she had three more children: Nancy, Jane and Elizabeth. Nancy was also christened in Killington where Jane's brother Robert's family lived. The other two children were christened in Natland just South of Kendal and near to Kendal Parks Farm where John farmed.
While there is assumption that Jane formally married John, there is no record of their marriage. The wedding would have been in late 1833 or 1834.
Tragedy struck in January 1840 when John died of a fever. Elizabeth was only 6 weeks old.
In the 1841 census Jane is living with her daughters Mary Ann, Nancy, Jane and Elizabeth, her sister Elizabeth KENDAL and with their farm servants Edward and John THEXTON. Mary Ann was called Mary Ann MACHELL, rather than Mary Ann KENDAL.
In October 1841 Jane married Edward THEXTON. The marriage entry gives her name as Jane MACHALL and her father's name as Robert KENDAL.
Edward's father (deceased) had been a husbandman (i.e. he farmed rented land) up at Selside, so Edward would know his trade and would have been able to manage the farm. Edward and Jane had two further daughters Ann (1843), who died young, and Margaret (1845).
Jane died of gastro-enteritis in Finkle Street, Kendal, in February 1849. In 1851 Jane's two oldest daughters were in service in Kendal, and her two youngest were living with their grandmother Nancy KENDAL.
