Narrative and Notes

Thomas WHEELWRIGHT was a gardener of Rotherby in the County of Leicester.

He married Mudwin some time prior to 1684, although it was probably 1678-1682 as he had a son William who was likely born in 1681-3, but whose baptism is missing.

Thomas and Mudwin had six children including William, although Elizabeth and Benjamin died young and George, who must have still been in the care of his parents, died aged 31.

When Thomas WHEELWRIGHT died in 1738, he son William received £5, his son John got £6, his 'greatest brass pan' and a book entitled 'The Whole Duty of Man'. His four grandchildren, Thomas UNDERWOOD, William UNDERWOOD, Mary UNDERWOOD and Elizabeth UNDERWOOD received £8, a ewe and a lamb each, and his nephew William BLANKLEY and niece Mary HODGE got £1 each. His daughter Mary UNDERWOOD received the remainder of his estate.

There are no Leicestershire baptismal records for a Thomas WHEELWRIGHT. The nearest is a Thomas WHEELWRIGHT baptized in August 1655 in West Hallam, Derbyshire by William and Mary WHEELWRIGHT.

A possible more local father was Thomas Oveton WHEELWRIGHT who was buried on 30 Jan 1655 in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
