Elizabeth NOKES was born in Stoke Prior in 1782.
She married John Weaver in 1806 at St Martin's, Birmingham. Between 1780-1820 many Bromsgrove people married in Birmingham churches. It is not quite clear why and possibilities could be that it was cheaper or Birmingham was then a very attractive place to get married in (culturally and socially). Hence it is unlikely that the NOKES' who got married in Birmingham actually lived there. Certainly the marriage licence of Joseph NOKES (brother of Elizabeth) shows that he was a resident of Bromsgrove who subsequently married at St Martins in The Bull Ring. Her brother Moses (named for their father Moses NOKES) was also married at the same church.
Elizabeth was the mother of William WEAVER and nine other children between 1810 and 1824.
She was a beneficiary of £20 from her brother Joseph's will of 5 May 1813, and this may have, in part, funded the acquisition of their house in the Strand in July 1813.
Another link between WEAVER and NOKES families was found while reviewing an indenture dated 20 July 1813 made between Benjamin Witherford and Benjamin Tilt on one hand, and John WEAVER and Jonathan BROMFIELD (who had by this time married Ann WEAVER, John WEAVER's daughter) on the other, for the conveyance of buildings. The buildings are specified by reference to previous and current occupants: "... a certain street or place there called the Strand heretofore in the occupation of John Holmes late of Watton and now of Moses Nokes his undertenants or assigns ...". This Moses NOKES was Elizabeth's older brother who was living in Bromsgrove at that time. Moses was a baptist preacher.
Finally, the connection between WEAVER and NOKES families continues through the 19th century as Levett and Joseph NOKES appear at the funeral of William WEAVER (Elizabeth's grandson) in 1897.
Elizabeth was widowed in 1844 and died herself in 1852 of bronchitis. The informant of her death was Charlotte PINFIELD who in the 1851 Census is the wife of James PINFIELD, Nailor. They lived two houses away from William Weaver in the Strand.
