Narrative and Notes

Thomas was the husband of Abigail, mother of Ann BIRKETT who married Edward MACHELL in 1766. He lived at Lambrigg Park, Lambrigg. Lambrigg Park was a long lofty fell rather than major house or estate. He farmed sheep, cattle, bigg (four rowed barley) and oats.

Thomas died in 1756 as evidenced by his will which passed probate on 18 Sep 1756. He left provision for his widow Abigail and sums for his four children: £80 and the real estate for George and £30 each for Isabel, Ann and Mary, provided that they didn't display "coilfulness obstinacy or disobedience". He also ensured that the children's education was completed. Abigail was the sole executor and his trustees were Richard WARD of High house and Leonard Ewan of Green Dikes. The value of the estate was a considerable £422.

Thomas' father was George BIRKETT, husbandman of Lambrigg Park, whose will passed probate on 27 Apr 1732. Thomas may have named his only son after his father. George was buried on 7 Nov 1731, probably in Kendal Parish.
