Eliazer OXLEY was born in Horbury (4 miles to the south west of Wakefield). He married Anne CONWAY in South Kirby in 1672. He was 28 and she still in her teens.
In October 1675, Eleazar OXLEY received a Sacrament Certificate to prove that he was not a Catholic, and therefore could hold a public office, in this case as an excise man. To gain the certificate Eleazar would have had to take the communion in a Protestant church that denied transubstantiation. This had to be completed within three months of being admitted into office. This suggest that Eleazar only became an excise man after July 1675.
As an excise man Eliazer would have be posted to various towns in Yorkshire including Helmsley in 1680, Stokesley in 1681 and Barton in 1684/85 where he baptized children. After this time, he - or at least his family - stayed in Wakefield.
Eliazer died in 1694, shortly before his thirteenth child, Jane, was born.
