Robert KENDAL would have been born about 1730-1737.
Robert was a husbandman who farmed at Oaks, Marthwaite near Sedbergh in Yorkshire. He married a girl called Jane and they had six children who all survived into adulthood.
Jane was still living when Robert wrote his will in June 1809, and the fact that he hadn't changed it before his death in September 1812, suggests that she outlived him. In his will he gave each of his children £100, his son Thomas and Robert kept the tenancy of his farm and his daughter Margaret got his best father bed, a snap table (a probably round topped folding table) and a warming pan. Responsibility for wife Jane's support and comfort was placed on Thomas and Robert.
His son Robert farmed High(er) Oaks Farm.
It appears that some of his children employed a formal naming scheme when christening their children. Male child would be named as follows:
father's father
mother's father
father's paternal grandfather
father's maternal grandfather
mother's paternal grandfather
mother's maternal grandfather
The same would apply to girls, although sometimes the mother's family would take precedence. While not an exact science and bearing in mind that a name shared by the parent's ancestors could only be used once, it is possible to guess the name of Robert's parents.
Robert's children were called Thomas, William, John, Robert, George and Margaret which suggests:
- his father was Thomas
- his wife Jane's father was William (or also Thomas)
- his father's father was John (or also Thomas or William)
- his mother was called Margaret (although this might have been his wife's mother)
Three of his sons are known to have had their own sons as follows:
John: Arthur, Robert, Thomas, John (Arthur was mother's father)
Robert: Robert, Thomas, John (Thomas was mother's father)
George: Robert, Thomas, George, John, William, James
In each case, Robert is for their father Robert. Again the evidence is consistent with Thomas being Robert's father.
There is only IGI record for a Robert KENDAL christened by Thomas in England 1712-1741 (min age at first birth 18, max age at last birth 60) is:
