William SCOTT married Elizabeth BUSHER in Kendal in 1759.
They had eight children: Ann (1760), Margaret (1763), Joseph (13 Jan 1765), Elizabeth (1766/7), James (1769), Bella (1772), William (1774) and Thomas (1777). James might have been the James who, in 1787, was apprentice to James and Alice SAVIGE, a cooper of Stricklandgate.
There are no published burial records for a William SCOTT near Kendal, other than William's own son who was buried in April 1776.
William might have been the William SCOTT baptized by John and Mary SCOTT on 29 Nov 1741 in Kendal, although this would make him just 18 when he married. Also he did not name any of his children John or Ann.
Other information:
There were several candidates for being Joseph SCOTT's parents.
A. Joseph SCOTT and Ann ATKINSON baptized a Joseph SCOTT on 4 May 1760, but had no other children. None of Joseph junior's children were called Ann. Does not fit with Joseph's age at death.
B. William SCOTT and Elizabeth BUSHER had eight children: Ann (1760), Margaret (1763), Joseph (13 Jan 1765), Elizabeth (1766/7), James (1769), Bella (1772), William (1774) and Thomas (1777). James might have been the James, who in 1787 was apprentice to James and Alice SAVIGE, a cooper of Stricklandgate. Both of the names Willian and Elizabeth were used by Joseph.
C. John and Jane (nee MOFFIT) SCOTT had eleven children: Betty (1758), Mary (1760), Jane (1762), Eliz (1764), Joseph (31 Aug 1766), Ann (1768), Agnes (1771), Jhn (1774), John (1775), Thomas & John (1776) and Michal (1780). In 1787 John was deceased with the "Widow SCOTT" living with John (Boy), Betty (Daughter), Jane (Daughter) and Aggnes (Daughter) in Stricklandgate. There was also a John SCOTT who was apprenticed to William BEST, a tailor of Stricklandgate. This John could have been the son of John and Jane SCOTT. He would have been about 11-13 in 1787. Joseph did not use the name Jane when naming his children.
Based on Joseph's date at death, which suggest a birth year of 1765, and his childrens' names, the most likely parents are William SCOTT and Elizabeth BUSHER.
Other SCOTTs in Kendal in 1787 include:
- Another Widow SCOTT was living in Stricklandgate in 1787 - this time alone.
- Miss SCOTT and Elcey SCOTT who were residing at Mrs CARMOULS of Stricklandgate in 1787
- Jhn SCOTT,a weaver in Whinfell, with 3 males and 2 females (unnamed)
A William SCOTT, "walk miller" of Kirkland, Kendal, was mentioned in a probate record dated 4 May 1807.
