Joseph SCOTT was a tailor, like his son Thomas. He lived in Wool Pack Yard in Kendal.
There are three possible christening records, but the one that best fits with his age when he died, and the naming of his children is the second of these:
04 May 1760 Kendal - Parents: Joseph SCOTT and Ann ATKINSON
13 Jan 1765 Kendal - Parents: William and Eliza (BUSHER)
SCOTT
of Kirkland
31 Aug 1766 Kendal - Parents: Jhn and Jane (MOFFIT) SCOTT of Stricklandgate (John was likely a shoemaker and appeared in the Universal British Directory 1793-98.)
Joseph married Sarah MARR in Kendal in May 1786.
At the time of Constables census in 1787 Joseph is working as a tailor on Stricklandgate, Kendal with his wife Sarah and children Mary and William. He is also mentioned as a 'taylor' in the Universal British Directory 1793-98. In 1829 he was living in Woolpack Yard, Kendal with his wife Sarah and still in business as a tailor.
Their children included: Mary (1787-1797), William (1788), John (1789), [Sarah (1790),] Joseph (1791), Betty (1793), James (1794), Thomas (1796), Edward (1797), Sarah (1799), Agnes (1802), Thomas (1804) and William (1810).
Sarah, born 1790, has no baptismal record, but a Sarah, daughter of Joseph SCOTT, died age 7 in 1797.
Joseph died in January 1836 while sitting in a chair at his home in Wool Pack Yard. He was 71 years old, and his death was reported in the Kendal Marcury.
Other information:
There was at least one other Joseph SCOTT baptizing children at that time in Kendal: Joseph and Ann Banks SCOTT. For example, they baptized a Joseph SCOTT on 27 Jan 1790.
A further two children John (1813) and Ann (1815) were christened by a Joseph and Sarah SCOTT in the Wesleyan Methodist chapel on Stricklandgate, however Ann's record confirms she was born in Stainton Parish of Heversham. It is likely that both these children were from the same (different) family. it is possible that William (1810) was also of this family.
Probate records, including an administration bond, proxy of renunciation and tuition arrangements exist for a Joseph SCOTT, tailor of Old Hutton in Kendal dated 20 July 1820. A recognizance, at the Kendal Midsummer Sessions, dated 22 May 1815, was made against William SCOTT, tailor, Thomas THOMPSON, farmer and Joseph SCOTT, tailor, all of Old Hutton, for William SCOTT to appear and to keep the peace towards Isabella NELSON of Old Hutton Bridge end, singlewoman.
