Narrative and Notes

Thomas DAY was born in Blockley, Worcs (now Gloucestershire) in 1810 and was baptised on 29 July 1810.

A 'Clergyman's View of His Flock' census taken in 1828 in Blockley Parish gives Thomas' parents as John and Rebecca DAY.

Thomas was a millwright and machine maker by profession. Having trained with his father in Blockley, Thomas appears to have headed up a new carpentry business in Rynal Street, Evesham under his father's name. He assumed control sometime between 1835 and 1840. In 1840 in Bentley's Directory of Evesham, Pershore is "Day Thomas, millwright, Littleworth-st" and indeed he is living there with his wife and four children in 1841. In 1855 the entry in M. Billings's Directory and Gazetteer of the County of Worcester 1855 gives "Davis[sic] Thomas, millwright and agricultural machine maker, Rynall St".

By 1871 they had moved to Brick Kiln Street.

Thomas and his wife Elizabeth (nee DAY) had at least seven children. All but two of them (Mary and William) appear in the 1851 Census when they were living at Rynal Street. One of the missing children, Mary, would have been 16 and may have taken a position with another family.

In his turn, their son, Thomas Charles DAY, christened 11 June 1841 at St Lawrence, Evesham, was also a millwright. He was living with them in Brick Kiln Street in 1871 and still in 1881.

Their daughter Ann Rebecca was born in 1843/4 in Evesham and was christened on Good Friday 1844. She married Frederick STOKES a wheelwright in Broadway.

At the time of the 1881 census Thomas and Elizabeth had their grandson, Frederick Thomas MEDDINGS, staying with them.

Thomas died in April 1889 aged 77 of "Natural decay". His daughter Jane registered the death.
