John STOKES married Anne WILLIAMS in Sarsden, Oxfordshire in 1744. He had been living in Churchill, she in Sarsden.
They had nine children with the first three children being baptized in Kingham and the remainder in Churchill.
Their son William died aged 2 in 1757, but horrifically, in October/November 1759, Mary, John, Ann and their second William all died within days of each other leaving just Samuel and the infant Thomas (my 5x great grandfather) alive. There was no obvious epidemic in progress and not many other Churchill residents succumbed, suggesting that the infection was restricted to the family. Indeed they may have been quarantined with Thomas being excepted due to his age. Another catastrophic possibility was a house fire.
John may have been buried in Churchill on 21 Jun 1765.
A later record for the burial of a John STOKES, the son of the widow STOKES is recorded in 1769, also in Churchill.
