The only baptism of a Susannah UNDERHILL near where she was later married was on 26 Apr 1729 in Coleshill by "John Undrill and his wife". John UNDERHILL had married Anne PADDY in 1728 and it is thought that Susannah was their first child. On 10 February 1731, Susannah's brother John was baptized, but tragically her mother was buried that same day. Although there is no burial record for the infant John it appears that he did not survive.
Susannah's father married Catherine BROWN in July 1733, and baptized another John in 1734 and three later children, before her step-mother died in 1741. Aged 12 Susannah was again motherless and would have had to undertake all the domestic duties involved in raising her siblings.
Susannah married Joseph REYNOLDS of Upper Arley, Worcestershire on February 1746 (or 1747 CE) in Coleshill, Warwickshire. Susannah was only 17 when she married Joseph, but this might have been an escape. What Joseph was doing in Coleshill is a mystery as Upper Arley is 31 miles to the west. Nowadays the city of Birmingham lies between Coleshill and Upper Arley, but in 1746 it barely existed as a town.
Their first child was baptized 9 months and 17 days after the marriage in Upper Arley. The timing hints that the child and marriage may not have been planned. Having moved to Upper Arley she may never have seen her birth family again.
Susannah and Joseph baptised 10 children in Upper Arley, Worcestershire between 1747 and 1772. Susannah died in 1773 and Joseph died two years later in 1775.
They gave some of their children some interesting given names including:
- Henry Jevon
- Susannah Jevons
- Joseph Roberts
- Chillingworth.
A reasonable guess is that these were friends of the Richard and Susannah. A family called CHILLINGWORTH was living in Upper Arley at that time, including a Hannah CHILLINGWORTH who married Joseph BALL in Upper Arely in January 1747, 10 months before the baptism of Joseph and Susannah REYNOLDS first child in November 1747. And a family named ROBERTS was also living in Upper Arley, including an Ann ROBERTS who married Thomas HIGGINS in 1749. And while there are no records for JEVON(S) in Upper Arley but there were many in nearby Kidderminster.
