Thomas CURTIS baptized Anne CURTIS in September 1701 in Chipping Campden, 3 miles from Saintbury where Anne was married. It is entirely possible that the family lived somewhere between.
One or more Thomas CURTISs baptized eight children in Chipping Campden between 1681 and 1702 including: Elizabeth 1681, Susanna 1683, Joanna 1685, Richard 1687, Richard 1690, John 1698, Anne 1701 and Mary 1702-1707. (And there were another six earlier baptisms between 1660 and 1679, so almost certainly there were multiple Thomas CURTIS families active in Chipping Campden at that time.)
There are two Thomas CURTIS baptismal records for Chipping Campden which might be Thomas':
- Thomas 17 Mar 1660 by Thomas CURTIS,
- Thomas 27 Mar 1676 by Thomas CURTIS.
Either (i) all the above named children were the offspring of the elder Thomas CURTIS born 1660 (and one or more wife), or (ii) there were two families.
On further jigsaw piece is a marriage in 1699 (or 1700 depending on source) of "Thomas Curtis, of Wessonton, & Mary Eden , of Campden 18 Feb [ditto mark]" where the ditto mark refers to the year 1699. Source is Phillimore's Marriages. IGI gives the year of that marriage as 1700, but it's unclear whether IGI was based on the original parish record. Another Phillimore transcription issue is that "Wessonton" does not exist - the nearest likely match would be Weston Subedge, which lies between Chipping Campden and Saintbury.
This marriage ties in nicely with the baptisms of Anne (1701) and Mary (1702), so it makes sense that Mary EDEN was the mother of Anne, but it remains unclear whether Anne's father was the Thomas CURTIS born in 1660 who had earlier children with an earlier wife or the Thomas CURTIS born in 1675 who was a bachelor when marrying Mary EDEN in 1699/1700.
Other earlier Thomas CURTIS marriages that may explain the earlier baptisms include:
- 1671 in Chipping Campden to Jane GYE/GUY
- 1681 in Tetbury to Ruth PIGEREN (48 miles away although no Tetbury associated baptismal records can be found near Tetbury so it can't be ruled out.)
