Zacharias (or occasionally Zachariah) BROOKER was born in about 1715.
One possible baptism was in Brighton by William BROOKER and his wife Sarah CHATFIELD in August 1715. If correct then he had 14 siblings who were all baptized by William and Sarah (although Sarah is not always mentioned in the records.) One of his younger brothers, Springet, married in Wilmington, Sussex in 1747 so this family did not all migrate to London. After his baptism Zacharias did not appear in any records near Brighton.
An alternative theory is that the his family were already in London. For instance:
- Zachar "BROTKOR" or "BROCKTOR" [3rd party transcriptions: original not seen] who was born on 24 Dec 1695 and baptized in St Giles Cripplegate in London on 1 Jan 1695 by Bryan and Sarah. Zacheus BROOKE baptized in St Botolphe Without Aldersgate, also in 1695, by William and Mary
If one of these was Zacharias' father then he would be 20 when Zacharias was born as his first son and named for his father.
He married Elizabeth BELCHIER in 1736. They had at least six children, living in St Giles in London.
Zacharias wrote the first part of his will in 1788, with the majority of words spelt phonetically suggesting that he was never formally schooled as a child but had picked up reading and writing later in life.
