John Ellison was a cotton weaver and the father of Nancy ELLISON.
He married Agnes "Aggy" BARNES in 1797 and they went on to have 6 children. They lived in Mellor, probably at Old Dads. "Aggy" died in January 1823 aged 44.
A few years later, it was John who reported the death of his daughter Nancy in July 1838 after she died in childbirth. At the time he was living at Old Dads, on the north side of Mellor Lane, just east of Mellor. John was unable to sign his name.
Three years later, John, aged 70-74, is still living on the north side of Mellor Lane in the house of Thomas and Ann JANSON and their 5 children. A James NIGHTINGALE, 18, is living with him.
John cannot be found in the 1851 census. Based on his age being 70-74 in 1841, John would have been born between June 1766 and June 1771. The best fit death certificate for a John ELLISON is dated 1847, a weaver who died of dysentry aged 80. The record places him in Ribchester which is 6 miles from Mellor, but he may have been staying with family.
