John SAGAR was originally from Helm which is a small hamlet west of Askrigg. He is described as a clerk in the Parish Records which implies he was the Parish Clerk as was his son Warwick.
He married Christabell REYNOLDS from Nappa Scar (a limestone cliff just SE of Askrigg) in 1715. Mary Queen of Scots was briefly imprisoned in Nappa Hall in the 16th century.
Christabell she bore him four children before she died in 1723. In the first of these John is referred to as "John Sagar junr" suggesting that his father was also John SAGAR.
In 1728 he married Elizabeth TIPLADY and they had a further eight children.
